Ascent Trip Report

Started from our hut in Husadalur, crossed the Krossa river on what appears to be a mobile bridge on wheels, which I assume is to deal with the ever shifting glacial river. We made our way to the Basar area and from there it is a short, but steep hike to the summit of Réttarfell. Superb panorama from the large bald summit, including views of two nearby glaciers. Had the summit entirely to ourselves while we were there, enjoying the incredible views on a clear, relatively warm and calm day. Occasionally helicopters spotted flying over Eyjafjallajokull, apparently quite popular with tourists since the 2010 eruption.

We climbed Valahnukur on our way back to our hut in Husadalur, where we met a group of at least 20 that was descending that peak, quite a shock after our day of near solitude.
