Ascent Trip Report

Finally bagged my first Vermont 4K!

Due to a lack of time (I didn't hit the trail until 4:20 PM), I went up and down the ski area's hiking trails. After getting some info from a very helpful staff member in the bike/hike shop, I headed up the E trail, which was surprisingly wooded for the most part, except for a few sections where it crossed/followed ski trails. There were also neat signs on trees explaining what they are, the story behind them, etc. Halfway up, I met a kind gentleman who lives in the area, and we chatted for a bit about the ski area, its trails, and the local events. We then parted ways before coming up to a steep section, then I reentered the woods.

From that point, I walked through the longest wooded section of the trail- about 3/5 of its overall length. It was very scenic and my favorite part of the hike. After a 1/2 hour or so, I reentered the ski trails and followed them and a long wooden staircase to the top of the gondola station, where I chatted with another staff member before he 4-wheeled back down for the night. From there, I took the short J trail to the summit.

Killington Peak's summit had a fire tower (closed) and a communications tower, but it was open with excellent views to the north and west. I relaxed here for about 15 minutes, then I headed back to the summit restaurant (closed), where I talked with two ladies who walked up the steep A trail, then I headed down the C trail.

The C trail was basically a gravel access road. There wasn't really anything of note on the descent except for a deer I saw off the trail; we had a staring contest for a few minutes, then we parted ways. Eventually, I got back to the parking lot at 6:30, then I began the 2.5 hour drive back home.
