Ascent Trip Report

This was a rather gray and overcast day to bag #44, but the summit was not socked-in and there were excellent views from all major viewpoints.

I took the Carter-Moriah Trail from Bangor St. in Gorham all the way up. Since I wasn't sure about the parking, I parked on a dirt turnaround near some power lines and walked up the road a short distance to the trailhead. After that, off I went. Departure time: 8:10 AM.

The trail started out somewhat steep, following the corridor of an old logging road. It then got flat in spots, passing through some nice woods. About a mile and a half or so in, I reached the first of the many open ledges on this trail; many of these ledges had fine views toward the northern Presis and out past Gorham. Footing was tricky in spots, though, because some of the ledges were steep and/or wet. (This would seriously slow me down on the descent.) Also, somewhere in this area was the true summit of Mount Surprise, but I had no idea where it was or where to look.

After the Mt. Surprise ledges, the trail had a few PUDs, but otherwise climbed moderately through nice shady woods, although it was wet and muddy in spots. Eventually I came to a sign reading "Carter-Moriah Trail" to the left, and there was another sign to the left pointing to the summit. Excited, I darted up the spur path and reached the top of Mount Moriah at 10:25 AM.

It was very overcast, but it wasn't socked in and the view was well worth the trip! 360 degrees all around, with the Mahoosucs, the Presis (which were socked-in from afar), and the rest of the Carter-Moriah peaks were all visible. I took a water/snack/view appreciation break and then headed back to the trailhead, reaching it two hours after I departed from the summit.
