Ascent Trip Report

Checked in at Skaftafell Visitor Center - we were informed that nobody had climbed the mountain since May due to treacherous "fissure" (i.e. crevasse) conditions and the guides were not taking any clients up. Since we were in the neighborhood we thought we would give it a try anyway. We left at 3:05am and made it to the level area atop the glacier at 8:20. Sue & I each fell in crevasses before coming to a large crevasse with a rain-sodden bridge I deemed too risky to cross. It was raining steadily and visibility was poor; we never caught a glimpse of the summit. We turned around at that point and made our way back to the car, arriving at 11:30am. It was a fabulous day hike but we were slightly disappointed at being turned back so close to the top. Oh well.
