Ascent Trip ReportFollowed directions in Edward Earl's TR. Ironwood Rd is signed at the NV 445 turnoff 18.5 miles N of I-80 in Sparks. The 11-mile drive to Microwave Rd passes through an area scattered with homes and small ranches. Soon after leaving Quaking Aspen Rd, the 6-mile drive up Microwave Rd to Virginia Peak becomes very rocky, requiring caution. A high-clearance vehicle is advised, but 4-WD is not needed. Wild horses seen on upper slopes. From the spacious communications area (incl FAA radar dome) below the summit, we walked the remaining short way up the road to a small communications building and the easily ascended rocky area to the summit. The summit is topped by a carefully, well constructed 8'-9' surveyor's rock cairn, Two glass jars inside the top of the cairn include a small spiral register book from 1997 in one and large sheets of paper in the other with more recent signatures, including those of Bob Burd, Al Sandorff, and Daryn Dodge. Haze spoiled today's view.
