Ascent Trip Report

After having climbed Algonquin, I took a short break at the trail junction to Wright. The trail wasn’t too steep. After about 20 minutes, the snow and ice were no longer an issue, and I had to climb a crack in the rock, so I removed my YackTrax. I felt good using my rock climbing skills to conquer that small crack. The rest of the trail was pretty easy to ascend, and I was glad I took off my YackTrax. The trail was also easy to follow because of the cairns and yellow paint blazes. The view of Wright was tremendous, and there were good views in all directions. I really enjoyed the view of Mt. Colden with Mt. Marcy in the background. I took a few ‘selfies’ with my tiny tripod with Algonquin in the background. On the last picture a gust of wind came up and blew my gloves off the summit. I could see them on the ledge below, but decided to err on the side of caution and not climb down for them. On the way down, I caught a glimpse of what I think was “RONG” Mt. I’m not sure if it was, but it was a pretty site. I was back at the junction by 4:41. The whole side trip took only 1:39.

I had to return to the ADK Loj, where I parked my car earlier in the morning. The trip to the junction too me 2:30 and I expected to shave a little bit off that on the return trip. Some of he icy areas on the trail back were now under flowing water. The waterfall was very different from where I met the couple from the Czek Republic. The trail was mostly under water, and I had to be very careful to choose the right path. There were many more of these wet crossings, the rest of the way down, but I managed to keep my feet completely dry. After the trail turned to mud again, I took off my YackTrax, and less than 5 minutes later slipped on some ice, under the mud. I arrived at the trail register and signed out at 6:56. With plenty of daylight to pack up and drive home to Utica.
