Ascent Trip ReportI tried a Northern to southern route on this one. There may be other options available. I could not have timed this better, the night I arrived the Montana Conservation corps were at the trailhead camping out, and informed me they had just cleared out the trail.
To get to the trailhead, off I-90 take exit 77 and go south across the river on Petty Creek road. Cross the railroad tracks and go left on Southside Rd. Go about 2.1 miles and take a right on Albert Lothrop Road #5563 and head up the hill about 7 miles to the trailhead, which is on your right. The trailhead at the time has a "no motor vehicles" sign, but was not posted as to the trail name. The trail is #8, Petty mountain trail and heads downhill on the ridge for a loss of about 3-400 VF. In the saddle there is a sign indicating Petty Mtn Trail with a junction going to your left. Continue on the maintained trail to the top of the mountain. I nice walk, gradual grades along the ridge with no real steep sections.
The road to the trailhead is good, a passenger car with good clearance would make it. The road IS one lane with very little pullout areas for the most part, so running into oncoming traffic will undoubtably make someone back up for a long ways in either direction.
My GPS clocked 8.34 miles round trip and is about 3.6 miles one way as a crow flies.
The top makes me think this was the former site of a lookout of some kind at one time.
