Ascent Trip ReportBack to the AT heading away from the North Horn, the south Horn is on the AT. It was a very steep, large rock climb that would make a difficult climb with a full and heavy backpack but at least it is not very far. The views are good of the Sugarloaf ski area (if you like the view of ski trails cutting up a mountain) and back at West Peak but I thought all and all the views off the North Horn were more interesting and 360 degrees.
Karen, Willy, and I then descended into the thick cloud cover hoping to avoid rain and down the seemingly endless saddle between the horns and the West Peak. The saddle is not simply a downclimb. It levels out and re-climbs several times giving the feeling of a false saddle at least 3 times! It was a relief when we finally started the upward leg of the West Peak Ascent but it was farther down the Bigelow Ridge than one would seem. |
