Ascent Trip Report

Bigelow is a big mountain and its top has the rugged look of Maine mountain that is tattered by wind and rain often. THe Krummhotlz vegeation and thick moss cover reminding me of the coastal peaks of NE Maine. Some nice rock formations await after a steep climb through difficult class 1+ to class 2 trails. There was even one small section of the trail that required a little scramble which makes backpacking a little more interesting when the rock is wet. Other than that, the trails are designed to keep you off the steeper rock and out of the alpine so there is really no scrambling but good steep rocky ascent most of the way. The West Peak provides a very distinctive pyramid or triangular top that is interesting.

The views are outstanding although we got a lot of clouds and fog but the wind pushed them like thick blankets over the saddles and peaks reminding me of Mount Washington. The down climb over the eastern side is less aggressive and not nearly as deep to the saddle between Avery Peak and West Peak. By bagging this fine mountain, I now completed all but 2 of the County Highpoints of Maine.
