Ascent Trip Report

Showed up at the Hurricane Creek trailhead at 5:15am. Closed due to lightning strike fire. No wonder there was no one in the valley camping. Drove the 30 minutes to the Ice Lake trailhead. Was planning for a 6 hour, 12 mile, 5,000' climb. Ice Lake offered a 20 mile, 6,000' climb up both Sacajawea and Matterhorn. Left the car at 6:30am. at Ice Lake by 9:20. On top of Matterhorn at 10:30am. hiked the ridge to Sacajawea by 11:30. Class 2-3 along final ridge gendarmes. Left the summit by noon, descended the scree gulley straight to ice lake. At car by 4pm. Long 9.5 hour day, especially after Mt. Adams the day before. Drove 5.5 hours to Yakima, took a 3 hour nap, then finished the 2.5 hour drive to Seattle airport for 6am flight home.
