Ascent Trip Report

The goal was to climb the Tahoe-OGUL peak Mt. Mildred, but also the higher "Picayune" Peak on the same Mildred Ridge. Started at Five Lakes trailhead near Alpine Meadows ski resort. Hiked to PCT, and then to the Whisky Creek trail down into Whisky Creek canyon. At the cabins in the canyon, went right at the trail junction. The so-called Western States trail (as labeled on the map) has obviously not been maintained for many years and a number of downed trees have fallen on the trail. At another trail junction roughly 2 miles further, I took a left to Shanks Cove. The terrain changed from granitic to loose volcanic tuff and rocks. Any side-hilling became more difficult, like walking on beach sand. This trail is even more indistinct and essentially disappears in places. However, it goes around a giant volcanic wall on the ridgeline the easiest way possible. Now I followed the ridge on an occasional use trail over Peak 8109 to Mt. Mildred. From here I followed the ridgeline north to "Picayune" Peak, only deviating from the ridge to the east a little north of Mt. Mildred to get around some volcanic pillers. I returned about the same way. A challenging, but enjoyable dayhike.
