Ascent Trip ReportTH: I started at Barrett-Stoaddard Road just off the Mt. Baldy Road by mile marker 1.10 by a power plant.
Follow the Barrett-Stoaddard Road and you'll even go over a bridge with water and a few streams by some houses. You'll see a house that looks like it belongs in a fairy tale story.
.79 miles later you'll reach a gate that is locked
2.62 miles in you'll reach the unmarked junction for Stoddard Peak.
3.1 miles you'll reach the summit of Stoddard Peak after going over 2 sub peaks one has a cool rock that sticks straight up. The Summit is marked with a V12 sign. My map ended just after Stoaddard Peak so all I would have for the remainder of the trip was screen shots on my phone and a print out. So I did it first to get a lay of the land
3.58 miles and you're back at the junction. To return to the parking lot go left but to continue on to Frankish Peak go right.
5.55 miles you'll reach an old broken gate go through the gate and you'll quickly be greeted by some thick plants, water and fresh black berries (if they are in season)
at 6.05 miles you'll reach a junction go right toward Franish Peak and take the trail to the left when you find the two that run parallel to each other. There is a flat rusty light of some sort on the left side. Taking the other trail might get you there but I'm not sure.
Soon you'll be under some low trees in a beautiful and surreal trail marked with pink flagging.
6.6 miles a Junction with a cairn in the middle go right and you'll pass a fire break on your left, skip this for now, it goes to the summit but the other way is much more rewarding. you'll wrap around the summit and have some great views.
6.77 miles in you'll reach the summit of Frankish Peak. Don't for get to sign in under the tin can. I saw Mihani Giurgulesu's entry from 1/4/14 but his entry read 2013. It was probably his first mistake of the new year! Seeing this was pretty coo since I've studied some of his GPS routes for various tripsl. The last person to sign in before me was 7/4/14 and before that was 5/26/14.
to decent you can take the fire break down but its a little loose. Just keep your eye on the trail you took in and they will meet up at 7 miles of total hiking. Retrace your steps from here and you'll reach the TH after 13.8 mile! It took me 4 and a half hours!
Beautiful easy hike with up hill and downhill in both directions rewarding views, running water and blackberries in more then one location! It even rained a little Which made me happy. I only saw 3 people all day and they where all within a mile to 2 miles of the first gate.
lizards - yellow bellies
wasp - blue w/ red wings (unidentified)
My 28th "new" (not done by me before) peak if the year 2014.
13th Sierra Club Lower Peak Section summit.
28/50 new mountains for 2014.
