Ascent Trip Report

Having done some research, I persuaded my wife that attempting the drive up the access road to the peak would make an interesting detour on the way back from a day at Valley Church beach. We'd hired a 4WD, so were suitably equipped and managed to find the unmarked access road with little trouble. It was a slow but straightforward drive up, avoiding a few fallen rocks on the way. A helpful sign tells you where to engage 4WD. We parked outside the locked compound at the top, where there is a Cable and Wireless sign stating "no unauthorised access". I then noticed there was a fairly well-trodden track along the outside of the perimeter fence in both directions, so followed it clockwise to some obviously higher ground in order to get to the maximum possible elevation. At one point the fence had been breached and repaired; I could see the bare rock of the actual summit tantalisingly inside the fence. I carried on round to the opposite side from the gate, and the fence had been partly pulled down, low enough to climb over without much effort, enabling a quick few steps up onto the summit for great views and photos. Same route back out and down to the car, tight three-point turn outside the gate, then back down the access road. So, not a satisfying hike in any way, but an unexpected bonus getting to the actual summit.
