Ascent Trip ReportWe used the following webpage to plan the hike: http://4000footers.com/bigelowavery.shtml Sugar, Peishan and I parked at the Stratton Brook parking lot at 6:54am. It was very buggy and the mosquitos were very bad. We made our way up the fire warden’s trial to the intersection with Horns Pond Trail. We took the Horns Pond Trail and around a mile down the trail Peishan’s knee started hurting. She decided to turn back with Sugar and head back to the parking lot. I continued on up the trail arriving at the AT intersection at 9:11am. I went through Horns Pond campsite and took some pictures by the lake. I continued on the AT till I came to a sign that said viewpoint. I went past this sign about 100 feet and the trees cleared. I could see the view point sign lead to North Horn. So I backtracked and made my way over to North Horn arriving at 9:46am. North Horn is a bald peak with great 360 views. I made my way back to the AT and continued on to South Horns arriving at 9:59am. This peak only has views to the south towards Sugarloaf. I snapped some pictures but the peak was very buggy so I moved on. After making my way along the ridgeline line for 1.7 miles I rose above the tree line and came to the peak of West Bigelow at 11:04am. This peak is bald and has outstanding 360 degree views. I got great picture of Bigelow Avery peak. I continued on the AT through the Avery Col Campgrounds and up Bigelow Avery peak arriving at 11:28am. Again I had outstanding 360 degree views and a bald peak. There is an old foundation for a small building on top. This foundation has two BM markers inside it and two outside. They were 1928 survey markers. I took some pictures and ate lunch. I then headed back down to Avery campsite to the junction with the Fire Warden’s trail. I took the Fire Warden’s trail back to the parking lot arriving at 1:35pm.
