Ascent Trip Report

A visit to 3 peaks ....... 7.4km, 2h45 hours RT including breaks.

Today (the 7th day of our 9 day trip to the Gaspe Peninsula)is the start of an overnight trip to summit Mont Logan. The planned/prearranged-reservations are as per following:
a) Get picked up by a shuttle, 8h30 hours at Park Information Center on rte #299, and transported to the Refuge Nyclate (abt 65km). Rose will stay back and overnight at last night's campsite.
b) Once at Refuge hike to Mont Logan in the afternoon and on return visit the HPs of Mont Dodge and Mont Louis-Marie Lalonde.
c) Overnight at Refuge Nyctale.
d) Tomorrow morning (29th) between 11-12h00 hours get picked up by shuttle for return trip to prearranged corner of rte #16/hwy #299, estimated at 14-14h30 hours (15km north of Park Information Center). Rose and I will start our drive back home.

I made my reservations by contacting the Park's Director only because of time constraints (as reported in earlier reports). The recommended/official route is the SEPAQ Reservation Office and not the Parks Information Center on rte #299.

The first 30 kms of the drive are on rte #16 (hwy #299 to Refuge Huard at Lac Thibault), a good dirt road for passenger cars, however the last 20kms (beyond Lac Thibault) to Refuge Nyctale are on a rough/rocky road for high clearance vehicles only. The road goes over the ridge of Mont Louis-Marie Lalonde just before arriving at the Refuge.
The road actually continues west over the ridge on Mont Dodge on its way to the Mont Logan summit. This section of the road is part of the International Appalachian Trail (IAT) network.

We arrived at the Refuge Nyctale at 11h15hours. A second Refuge Chocoutte is just 100M before the Nyctale.

I dropped off my gear, ate a snack and set out for Logan. The westbound dirt road (IAT) climbs over the ridge of Mont Logan (1.5km), drops to a col before makings its final climb to the Mont Logan summit at 3.5km from the Refuge. This is the end of the road, the IAT continues as a wide swath in the stunted woods, as it drops/climbs to its next summit of Mont Fortin.

MONT LOGAN .... a dirt road westbound from the Refuge Nyctale ....7km, 1h30 hours RT excluding breaks.
An open huge rock pile capped with a small Communication Tower and 2 small sheds, a superb 360 panorama, a distance haze prevented me from seeing the Fleuve Saint-Laurent. My GPS 48.89014,-66.63870. I spent a good 40 minutes on the summit.

MONT DODGE ..... bushwack south from IAT .... 500M, 40 minutes RT.
On my return from Logan, I left the IAT at the crest-of-the-ridge (1.5km from the refuge, GPS 48.88963-66.61707) and bushwacked south in a fairly flat plateau ... stunted 3-4M high scrub pine woods with open areas, and some stretches of animal paths with droppings, moderate going. After stomping around I found no obvious high ground, choosing my spot at 48.88828,-66.61678 (about 200M south of IAT).

MONT LOUIS-MARIE LALONDE ..... bushwack south from IAT .... 1.2km, 45 minutes RT.
Got back to my Refuge with plenty of time to take in another short hike. I walked the IAT (road) eastbound 400M to the crest-of-the-ridge (GPS 48.89770,-66.59496), then bushwacked south. An obvious north-south ridge with somewhat dense pine stunted woods with downfall and open areas. Signs (paths & droppings) of more animal activity than on Dodge. Again I didn't find any obvious HP, chose a spot at 48.89663,-66.59513, perhaps 150M south of the IAT.

I got back to the Refuge for a lonely evening .... all alone and thinking, this Mont Logan climb completes all of the Quebec MRCG HIGH POINTS south of the Fleuve Saint-Laurent. When I got home I discovered this may not be the case ????? see my Mont Alexandre TR.
