Ascent Trip ReportA dirt road climb from hwy #132 ...... 6km, 1h55 hours RT.
Mont Saint-Pierre, located in the Haute-Gaspesie, rises vertically from the Rivers edge and is known for Hang Gliding and Para Gliding and home to the Mont Saint-Pierre Ecological Reserve. A 4x4 dirt road and the IAT climbs to the summit, which has a chalet with picnic grounds and a launch ramp for Hang Gliding. The International Appalachian Trail (IAT) goes right-over the summit. A large illuminated Cross is on the south knife edge ridge 250 meters below the summit. The views are simply outstanding.
From the local Municipal Campground we found our way to the TH just east of the village of Mont Saint-Pierre, a small parking area with a reception kiosk with a large IAT sign to one side.
I walked/climbed the winding/moderately-steep dirt road 3km to the summit, a small parking besides a grassed picnic area with chalet/toilets, Hang Gliding Ramp on the west side. The signed IAT continues east into the woods arriving at a height-of-land at 200 meters ...... a large pine tree with an IAT blaze is just ahead, the summit is left at 5 meters in dense woods, my GPS 49.22665,-65.78464.
The views of the bay to the west with the village of Mont Saint-Pierre are superb.
I descended south on the IAT, on the knife ridge (steep with stairs and safety rope handrail), visiting the large illuminated cross about 300 meters below the summit. Once the trail comes out at the road I stayed on the road the rest of the way.
After getting cleaned up we drove west on #132 to Ste-Anne des Monts for groceries, then south to the Parc National de la Gaspesie. We checked in for tomorrows climb to Mont Logan ..... which, if successful, will complete all of the COHPs south the the Fleuve. Got my fingers crossed.
Our Campsite was at Camping Mont Albert.
I should note that at Ste-Anne we picked up a Hitch Hiker, Christian from Rimouski, a mountain runner who is competing for the first time at the INTERNATIONAL SKY RUN, an international event with different race lengths (5km, Half/Full/Ultra marathons), apparently the first time in Canada. Christian has entered the half marathon. A total of 200 runners are expected.
