Ascent Trip Report I followed the description and gpx file for this trail from another hiker on this site and highly recommend you do the same. Even with the GPS the trail is a bit confusing; it often splits without warning or signage, but as much as I’ve seen, it does connect back to itself; at some point I wondered "off trail" finding myself behind a group of hikers I passed 20 minutes earlier. If you are the hiker that needs or likes trail/mile signage; this is not for you. The only sign is very near the top and points up to Baldy and down to Manker Flats.
The start of the trail is right next to the Manker Flats parking area. Walk past the white iron gate and follow the paved road, and after an almost 180 right turn it becomes gravel. The actual trailhead is unmarked but a very well worn trail about a mile from the gate. About 150 feet later you’ll pass the register.
The trail is pretty clear from here till you get to the ski hut at just under 3 miles. This is your last chance for water (at least there was water in the stream), and the rest of the way up is pretty exposed. Once you pass the hut there’s a short section that wanders through a boulder field, follow the cairns and you should be right on track.
At 3.5ish miles you’ll find yourself at the bottom of a ridge and the trail T’s to the left and right; go right. It’s a little steeper and has more scree and loose dirt but is much shorter. The last 1/4 mile to the summit still has some alternate routes but are never far off the main trail and you’ll be able to see posts and more cairns at the summit.
From the summit of Mount San Antonio, just look West and youll be able to see West Baldy and the half mile trail to its summit.
