Ascent Trip ReportA road and Boundary Line Swath climb over 4 peaks ...... 15km, 5h40 hours including breaks.
I am back to Zec Louise for a 3 day hiking trip, the goal is to complete the Boundary Peaks accessible from inside the Zec. I was received by Matthew at the Accueil, he has a Cache site here and does a lot of moose hunting. I paid my 9$ vehicle entry fee plus 20$ for 2 nights of camping.
The plan today was Peak 2550, Merrill Mountain South Peak and Peak 410.
All my trail distances in this TR are guess-estimates.
I drove Chemin Pisgah southerly 12.1km to a left turn on Chemin Caribou, then northerly 3.2km to a camping area on the right (a few trailers parked here). This was my TH. The drive to here on Caribou was a bit rough in spots and one can probably drive a bit further with a passenger car, it all depends on one's level of risk.
I walked/climbed the rough dirt road northerly 2km to a sharp right bend (switches back to the southeast). At the top of the bend (45.44623,-70.67494) looking north, I noted an ATV Hunter's Track at 30M to the right (east). Matthew had told me that I would find a track here going to the Boundary Line servicing a Hunters Cache.
I followed/climbed the track (rough and wet on this day) northerly 1km to the col and the USA/CA Boundary Line Swath (45.45053,-70.67240) ... at a salt-lick trap and a hunter's cabin. This is a very lush green grass/fern area.
I decide to first go eastbound on the Swath.
BOUNDARY PEAK 2550 ..... road and track from TH , 4km.
From the col I followed the swath eastbound 1km to the summit area on a well used ATV track, easy going. The Swath is starting to be overgrown (some head-high brush).
The obvious High ground is on the Canadian side, however the area is all tall grass/fern and thereby difficult to find "the" HP. I chose a spot at GPS 45.45202,-70.68117.
MERRILL MOUNTAIN SOUTH PEAK ..... 1.5km eastbound on the Swath from Peak 2550.
From Peak 2550 I continued eastbound on the Swath dropping to Monument 409 in a very wet/boggy col, had to hop/zig-zag my way through this area looking for dry ground to step on, then climbed to the summit at 1.5km. The high ground is on the Quebec side of the Line but nothing is obvious, my GPS right on the Line read 45.46278,-70.68359.
BOUNDARY PEAK 2550 ..... 1.5 km westbound on Swath from Merrill Mountain South Peak.
From Merrill South Peak I backtracked westbound on the Swath over Peak 2550 on the way to Peak 410.
BOUNDARY PEAK 410 .... 3km westbound on Swath from Peak 2550 or 5km from TH.
From Peak 2550 I dropped 1km westbound on the Swath back to my original col, then continued 2km to the summit, topped with Monument 410, embedded on the base is "US&CB SURVEY B+M 3319", my GPS here read 45.44484,-70.65080. The actual HP is 10M to the southwest of the Monument inside the Quebec woods.
The last section of the climb to the summit is steep, huffed and puffed. Super views to the northwest, took photos.
I backtracked to the col then TH (5km).
After getting cleaned up I drove to Camping Langlois on Chemin Des Cascades for the night (see Caribou Mountain-South Peak TR for tomorrow's trip).
