Ascent Trip ReportDrove up from Boston the morning of our attempt with my girlfriend Christine. It was her first big (4000+) hike so there were some nerves, though overshadowed by excitement. Unfortunately, it was very cloudy as we were driving up so we stopped for breakfast and decided to go out and hope it broke by the time we got to the summit. We got in around 915am, deciding on the shorter Beaver Brook Trail. Our theory was that if the clouds didn't break, at least we would get to see the cascades. The first mile is very steep but Christine powered through like a champ. We stopped to take a few pictures and saw the Beaver Brook hut before continuing to the summit. The second 1.9 is relaxing compared to the first. We reached the summit in 3 hours but the clouds didn't break unfortunately. Walking on the top of Moosilauke is an experience. There, the markers were key because if you get lost up there in a cloud, it'll be a while before you find your way back. The summit marker was stolen apparently, though they have a temporary one and still have the american flag up there. We sat and ate lunch then continued down the way we came. The way down was a little bit slower, our legs were spent and the rocks were wet. Stopping at the Woodstock Inn afterwards was the perfect ending to a great first hike for Christine. I'd like to go back without the clouds though. |
