Ascent Trip Report

Grassy Ridge Bald is spectacular in itself, but you'll be glad you went the extra mile if you continue south to the south end of Grassy Ridge--a rocky promontory with a spectacular rhododendron garden that was in full bloom on my visit (June 14). From Carvers Gap, follow the AT northbound 1.9 miles to a fork, where you leave the AT and stay on the unblazed but wellworn path up the ridgeline. After leaving the AT, it's a half-mile to the boulder atop Grassy Ridge Bald (displaying a plaque to Roan farmer Cornelius Peake) and then another half-mile across a saddle to the end of the ridge. That's a total of 5.8 miles roundtrip from Carvers Gap. (My hike measured 6.0 because all the parking at Carvers Gap was jammed full, so I had to park further down the TN side.)
