Ascent Trip ReportDespite the yucky forecast, I made the drive to Easton to check North Kinsman, South Kinsman, and Bald Peak off the to-do list.
I set out on the Mt. Kinsman Trail at around 10 AM. It followed a nice, narrow corridor at an easy grade to a woods road, onto which it turned right. From here, the grade was even easier, and I passed an old barn in the early going. Shortly after, the grade became slightly steeper, but nothing serious. About halfway in, I made a series of brook crossings that were a tad tricky due to the recent rain. I managed fine, and after the third one, I reached the junction with the yellow-blazed Bald Peak spur path at 2.1 miles. (I would bag Bald Peak on the way down this trail).
From there, it was a mostly moderate but very wet and slippery 1.6 miles to the Kinsman Ridge Trail. About 1/3 of the way up this section, the trail looped around an old section, which was nice because the old part looked very steep and rough! Parts of the trail were very wet and muddy, and in places flooded, all due to the rain. Near the end of the Mt. Kinsman Trail, the grade was somewhat steep, but it soon eased and I was at the Kinsman Ridge Trail, 3.7 miles from my truck.
The next section was a fairly steep climb to North Kinsman's summit, which was wooded but had a nice rock outcrop a few yards down the trail. It would normally have an excellent view, but it was socked-in, so nothing but gray today. I took a quick breather then headed to my next objective, South Kinsman.
