Ascent Trip ReportSet out for an evening solo hike/mountain run to bag Squaw Mountain. Driving through Orem, UT on University Ave, Squaw looms over and stands out with its sharp, jagged peak. This was my second attempt - the other was 3 weeks ago before work, but I had severely underestimated the climb.
This time around I started at 6:45pm MT (very late start, but knowing the sunset wasn't until 8:45, I felt like I had ample time). Heading East away from the Rock Canyon parking lot, I ran 1.5 miles into the broken asphalt/gravel trail, passing many people out enjoying the great outdoors, crossing the stream 3 times and then making a left at a post marked 060 (whatever that means). From here, it gets steep... many walking sections - too steep to keep a pace going. Around the 2.7 mile mark things level out and you can get a good stride going. I made it to the peak 3.6 miles in after 1 hour on the dot. Took great summit with incredible 360 panoramic views. Would be great if I had more daylight... oh well - BAGGED. Kept a steady, careful, pace down the mountain and I was back at the parking lot in 1h35m @ 8:20pm MT, 7.4 miles RT. Walking I would guess this is a 3 hour hike at least.
This is a popular hike, even this late in the day... can't imagine what it's like on Saturdays and Sundays. Seemed like there were going to be some nice flowers blooming towards the summit. Bring bugspray - dense vegetation and lots of dandelions for pesky bugs to enjoy. Very good training hike - do this once a week and you'll be in great shape.
The day always feels better having bagged a peak.
EDIT: I just realized this is the highest summit I've stood on to date. Bonus!
