Ascent of Baranof Island High Point on 2014-05-18Others in Party: | Greg Slayden -- Trip Report or GPS Track Edward Earl ----Only Party on Mountain | Date: | Sunday, May 18, 2014 | Ascent Type: | Unsuccessful - Turned Back | Peak: | Baranof Island High Point | Location: | USA-Alaska | Elevation: | 3750 ft / 1143 m |
Ascent Trip ReportSaw a grizzly bear near the beginning of the hike, about 100 ft away from us. We scared it off. The weather started the first night in the tent, and kept up for 36 hours. Also, worst bushwhack of my life. Ended up needing to climb 500 ft out of Lake 1,831 to avoid a massive waterfall drop off. It was a 50 degree slope covered in alder, glad I didn't fall. 3 days in the Alaska bush. We opted for the float plane pickup from Green Lake at the end of day 3. Soaked and freezing, ugh... Looks like my GPS batteries died as we reached Lake 1,831. Greg posted a full GPS track, so look at that, but don't repeat it unless you are a masochist.
