Ascent Trip ReportFrom Eugene take OR-126 East to the 42nd Street exit. Turn Left onto North 42nd Street and go north to Marcola Road. Turn Right onto Marcola and drive to the town of Mohawk. Once in Mohawk, turn Left onto Hill Road then turn Right onto Donna Road. The sign for Donna can be hard to spot. It is the first Right after you've turned onto Hill. The Mohawk Market is on the corner and there will be a well placed sign for the Rifle Range also at the turn. Follow Donna to McGowan Creek Road and turn left on McGowan. There is another Rifle Range sign at this intersection also. Zero your odometer on McGowan. Generally, you can stay on the pavement and not have a problem, but at 2.6 miles, you need to stay Right. Then at 4.2 miles, you should stay Left. At about 5 miles you should be passing under power lines. After the power lines are several other minor intersections. Make no turns off the pavement. At 6.8 miles the pavement ends. I parked here in the gravel area across from the McGowan Quarry. At the time I wrote this, the road was passable to standard passenger cars as far as I went with my bike (barring locked gates).
From my parking spot I rode my bike about 0.1 miles to a "Y" intersection where I went Right. Here is where I lose my mileage. During this ride I intended to summit both Mount Tom and Buck Peak. While trying to find a way up Buck, I rode a few miles around in the forest that went nowhere. After riding back to the main road I had no trouble finding the way to Tom by just remembering the map. From the "Y" follow the main gravel road that you are on as it works its way north and around Buck. As it comes around Buck it will begin to lose elevation. Once it begins gaining elevation again you should see the road going west-ish. There was a sign for BLM Road 16-3-1-2. This road will take you over the saddle between Buck and Tom. Stay left at a couple of intersections as you make your way to the northeast side of Tom. You will come to an intersection where the road goes up to your left and down to your right. Follow the road up till it reaches a gate. Less than a half mile past the gate is the summit area. Once there I found a path at the top of the quarry that led into the trees. As the path petered out I found rocks that seemed to be the high point. Have fun tagging them till you're content.
