Ascent Trip Report

I've been slowly doing all of the Taos County volcanoes on the Taos Plateau. This was one one of the last ones.

It's not easy to get to. From US 64 west of the Gorge bridge I turned off to the Taos Plateau access (well signed on the highway). There's a mileage sign after you turn off but all of the distances are wrong! It's a little over three miles back from here to the turnoff to the real plateau access road (again with a sign with erroneous mileages). You could also access this by crossing the John Dunn Bridge and following the road up the other side of the gorge--shorter mileage from Taos but rougher road. From this turnoff it's 11 miles to a gate and an intersection. Good road quality for a back country road. I turned left onto TP150 (not sure of the number). This one is a bit rougher but still no problem for a cautious driver in most cars. It's 4.2 miles to another side road (really only a track) that I took up on a previous trip when I climbed Cerro de Olla. Another 2.8 miles got me to a locked gate. The mountain is clearly visible from here, but it's still nearly two mile cross country to its base. I followed the road part way, veered off onto a side track and then started bushwhacking on a GPS heading. The ground was covered with small pinon, slowing my progress, but an easy bushwhack up and over a small intervening ridge. The short slog up the slope is pretty steep. I found myself getting winded towards the top. Great 360 degree views. where I enjoyed a short lunch. An amazingly isolated spot not that far from Taos.
