Ascent Trip Report

Began Harney Peak from the Sylvan Lake Trailhead (No. 9). Hiked up the 3 - 3.5 mile (one way) to the top. As this was an early April hike, there was some snow along the way on the northern slopes, but nothing of real concern. Majority of the trail was clear and easily useable (though we at several spots). We had actually packed crampons and ice ax in anticipation in having some snow and icy conditions. We never used them, though this may change from year to year. The hike was beautiful and the black hills were amazingly pretty. At the top, the lookout tower is spectacular. We hiked out to the ridge nearby which has two survey markers, though I still feel that the lookout tower was much higher and really on the true peak...though we did both just in case :).

We began hiking in late morning and got back in the late afternoon. We had some small children with us and were not going at a fast pace, but plodded along consistently.
