Ascent Trip ReportThis was the first of six steep Ohio knobs I climbed toady. Most folks who think about Ohio think flat, but southeastern Ohio is a topographical extension of Appalachia. The elevations on these knobs are all low, but many of them almost seem like real mountains with several hundred feet of elevation gain, and surprising views since they rise steeply from surrounding lowlands. Sugarloaf features and elaborate outdoor theater lanscaped around some boulders and a small lake.
I took Delano Rd east from 23, past 159 and Marietta Rd. The gated paved road up to the theater is just past the last intersection. Towing signs warn against parking at the entrance gate, but I doubted the theater would be opening early Sunday morning. The road winds up to the theater. From there it's a bit more than 200 feet of elevation gain to the top; some trails, but I also bushwhacked. Nice view.
