Ascent Trip Report

The distance from Hwy 95 (via Corn Creek Road) to the trailhead is about 20 miles or so. The gravel road is in decent condition and a 4x4 is not needed but a HCV is very helpful so as to not kill your sedan. We actually rented a Jeep Liberty that worked really well.

We parked at about 1030 hours at the trailhead. The trip starts out on an old road/wash that used to allow vehicles to go all of the way up to the cabin (about 5 miles). It takes about 2 to 2.5 hours of hiking. It wasn't a terribly hot day but we were cooking in the sun in the first 2-3 miles of hiking. The path then lead into a canyon where we were actually able to get some relief of shade. Once we got to the cabin, we took a quick break and then started for the peak. There is water at the cabin that is piped from a spring. You should filter the water before you drink it. The cabin itself is very clean and well maintained. A couple had camped in it the night before and used the wood stove to keep warm. The entire area looked like a great place to camp if that was ever a desire.

The route then followed a trail from the old road and off to the left of the cabin. It is fairly well cairned but it basically stays on the ridge and then takes a turn to the right once you get up there higher. The peak eventually comes into view (has communication equipment and towers on top). There wasn't any real snow to speak of. The weather was pleasant and we spent about an hour on the summit relaxing. We had actually hiked to Mt. Stirling a few hours earlier on this day so it was nice to have the climbing over with for this day. We descended uneventfully and made it back to the vehicle by 7 pm.
