Ascent Trip Report

We drove to Death Valley early in the morning, amid a heavy rainstorm in Pahrump, NV and unknown conditions on the mountain. After stopping in Stovepipe Wells, it was clear the whole upper half of the mountain was covered in snow. We made it to the end of the proper jeep road in Collin's Subaru Forester, though it pushed its abilities a little up the last hill.

The hike starts with a steep decent into a valley on the now-closed portion of the mining/Jeep road. In the valley floor, we left the road and headed up a series of ridges, on our way to the summit. There is some up and down here, but nothing severe. We began to hit patches of melting snow, as the day was comfortable. The breeze over the snowfields was cool, but I was in shorts and a t shirt for most of the hike. Terrain was pretty friendly, and the hike went fast. Great views of Telescope Peak from the top, and we took a few photos and ate lunch on the summit, though it got a little chilly when we cooled off. Route down was similar, but warmer, and the snow was melting off noticeably. Looking back at Tucki from Stovepipe Wells on the return trip, the snow was nearly completely gone. Fun and easy outing.
