Ascent Trip ReportInstead of following the well developed trail system back along the west side of Indian Fort Mountain I decided to try a bushwhack to Robe Mountain. I would forgo doing Devil's Kitchen and West Pinnacle for another trip to this fine mountain in central KY.
If there was any serious use of a trail out to Robe Mountain there is not now. The trail when you can find it is more of a herd path. It takes some careful looking to find it because tree fall and briers have covered much of it and there a lot obstacles to get around. After a while I realized that the faint herd path was not on the ridge but was along the west edge of the ridge. Later down the ridge as one approaches nearer to the saddle between Robe Mountain and the Indian Fort Mountain the herd path becomes an easier to follow unmaintained trail that someone marked with some blue ribbon. This is useful to follow a path that misses some of the brier areas although downfall sent me into some bad briers. I was hiking at a good pace all day over 3 miles and hour and suddenly my legs started to cramp. The saddle is nice area with some views of the other nearby peak and the climb up to the top of Robe is simple and not as interesting as the features on Indian Fort Mountain. The top has lots of briers in places and the peak is obvious.
I enjoyed more than anything the solitude as the Indian Fort Mountain trails are well used and nobody comes out this way but then again the views are more interesting back where the main trails are.
I then worked back and towards the main body of Indian Fort Mountain
