Ascent Trip Report

Daniel had climbed 3 (Algonquin, Porter and Cascade) of the 46 peaks since our hike of Giant two months earlier; he was hooked. We sent an e-mail to many of the office employees to publicize our next hike. Myriam, an engineer in her late 20’s decided to come with us for Big Slide. I picked both of them at Myriam’s apartment at 5h45 on Saturday morning. Unfortunately, after driving for two hours, we reached The Garden parking and it was full. So I left Myriam and Daniel there, drove to Marcy Airfield, parked and came back with a shuttle organized by the town of Keen. This set us back 45 minutes in all.

We hiked up by The Brothers trail. It was a hot summer day and all 3 of us were sweating abundantly. I also found out that the other two had both went to bed late the previous night and had drank their fair share. Daniel still talks to me as Big Slide being one of the toughest hike he has done. I think, it’s one of the easiest. So, I slowed down my pace to match theirs, especially Myriam. But once, we were getting close to the summit, Myriam had ridden herself of hangover, and picked up the pace and starting distancing us in front. Daniel and I reached the summit after 3 ½ hours and Myriam was not there. We decided to wait 10 minutes and then started looking for her. She showed up about 5 minutes after us, she had missed a turn and lost the trail. I decided I would try to keep the group together after that small incident even though it was insignificant. I just didn’t like the feeling of not finding her at the summit when she had gone in front of us.

It was gorgeous at the summit. We took the map out and identified every summit we could see. We took the usual summit pictures and ate our lunch. We also just rested and took up the sun. After an hour we picked all of our gear (I double checked) and started down. We picked to go down the trail that follows Slide Mountain Brook and then follow Johns Brook trail (I had been on that trail in 1999 when I had brought my wife backpacking for the first time of her life to Wolf Jaw Brook). This trail is wide enough so all 3 of us could walk abreast. I gave the rest of my water to Myriam who had run out; Daniel had run out too but didn’t speak about it. I had brought 2 litres, Myriam 1½ litres and Daniel 3. It was 850 meters (2800’) vertical & 15½ km (9.6 miles).

We finally reached the parking after 8 hours (including the one-hour summit break), I took the shuttle and came back to The Garden with the car. While we changed, surprise! I had brought 3 cans of beer in a cooler full of ice. It was appreciated.
