Ascent Trip ReportAn easy/moderate snow covered road walk with a short bushwack ..... 3km, 1 hour RT.
Camp Fortune, a Ski Center located in the municipality of Chelsea just north of Gatineau/Ottawa, is made up of three sites (The Valley, Meech, Skyline) with each ski slope differently named and of different degree of difficulty. The Ski Slopes north of the summit are called Clifford and rated as easier slopes.
From Ottawa we drove north on Hwy #5 to exit 12 (Chelsea) then west on Chemin du Lac Meech (through the village of Chelsea) for 4.7km to a left on Chemin Dunlop which heads south 1.7km to the Ski Center parking lot (stayed right at the fork just before the ski center, left goes to the Lodge) .... south is the Clifford Chair Lift Station and its slopes, north the Red Cross Emergency Clinique and east the Lodge. This was our TH.
At the west end of the parking lot is a service road heading southwest, then bending left (southeast) as it winds/climbs to the summit at about 1.5km. This was our route, still snow covered but soft and not too slippery with just boot wear.
Half way up the service road is Camp Fortune's Aerial Park and Zip Line Adventure Facilities, considered the best in the area. The first time I've seen this type of installation ..... cables and chairs high up in the trees. Looks fun and perhaps for the younger set.
The summit, capped with a huge/fenced-in, CBC Communication Facility (tall Tower and numerous large buildings), is wooded and offers no views. The views are to its north, we walked left around the fence line and bushwacked north about 150M to a rock outcrop (at a slightly lower elevation) just above the Clifford Chair Lift Station and the different runs . The views here are outstanding and well worth the visit ..... and open panorama to the north.
From the Chair Lift Station we walked west on a lesser service road a short distance to the main service road and back tracked to the parking lot.
This whole area is very popular with the locals, a lot of people out today, either x-country skiing, walking or running.
"AN EARLY MORNING WALK IS A BLESSING FOR THE WHOLE DAY." ........ thoreau
