Ascent Trip ReportAnother day without a peak in the Cascades. I am growing tired of my increasing failure rate here in Washington. Summer cannot come soon enough. Today's failure was due to a much crappier logging road approach than expected followed by excessively hot sloppy snow. The former logging road is a far cry from what I expected. Based on my previous ascents in Washington, I expected a locked gate (why are the gates always locked?!), followed by a nice wide mountain bike friendly road all the way to 2,600 ft where I would leave the trail. My bike is currently out of commission, but it would not have been any use on this shitty road, though I expected the hike to be fast. I was wrong - the old road is completely overgrown with alder and crossed with fallen trees at every turn. It is also over 3 miles from the trailhead to the point where you begin to ascend, longer than expected. By the time I began ascending at 2,600 ft, I was well behind schedule and the snow was turning into mush. I strapped my snowshoes on around 3,000 ft, but I would only make it to 3,400 ft this day. The snow was just too soft to make any progress. I would step up and slide almost right back to where I had stepped from... I sat down in frustration and ate my lunch. I did the math and realized that if I topped out at the rate I was going, I would return to my car after dark (which is 8:30pm now). I still didn't make it to the car until almost 4pm. Another frustrating day without a peak...
*GPX note: The small gap is due to dying batteries, I forgot to swap new ones in, but whatever, this track is pretty useless for anybody who actually wants to summit. |
