Ascent Trip Report

I started out with sketchy trail info, after the hike I found the guide book "The Other 54" by Spencer Morrissey at EMS in Lake Placid. He works there but wasn't in. He gives the same route as I had ,only he tells you to park outside "the village's pile tailing storage site". I parked inside and later a state trooper told me that this is a no-no. The book gives good directions except where to find the "herd path", the same would be the case for tomorrows climb to TR mtn.

The rough woods road follows the hydro lines to the Communication Tower at about 3650', located in clearing with its perimeter full of the downed woods. As you get to the clearing you'll find a brown building and the Tower on your right, straight ahead of you is Averill's summit elev 3803' in a general south direction (you can not see the summit). The tower has 3 Guys Wires Anchored to the mountain.

AVERILL PEAK
Walk left/downgrade about 200' to the East Guy Wire Anchor. To the right of the Anchor is a faint start for the very rough "herd path", marked by a red tape on a tree. Once on the path it is easy to follow, orange tapes lead the way, lots of blowdown, its a 15 minute hike to the main summit of AVERILL PEAK. I wasn't prepared for the rough path so I got scratched-up pretty good, I was dressed in shorts and t-shirt.
I backtracked to the Tower.

LYON MOUNTAIN-NORTHWEST PEAK
If you walk to the north side of the Tower, towards the North Guy Wire Anchor, you'll pick-up a "herd path" on your left (again marked by red tape) that leads 200+ yards to LYON MOUNTAIN-NORTHWEST PEAK at about 3700' elev. From here you are able to see the top of the trees on Averill Peak.
NB: --- I find the name of this peak and the one to its Northwest to be somewhat erroneous.
