Ascent Trip Report

We started backpacking near the Taos ski area. My son Garret and I hiked 2.6 miles, past Williams Lake. We set up base camp below a beautiful waterfall. The second day we started up the cliff face of Lake Fork Peak. We got about half way up. We felt a little in danger at times, so decided to go back down and around the south side and scramble up. We made it to the top of the beautiful peak. My son and I debated whether to hike Vallecito peak or peak 12,819. We decided to hike Vallecito. The distance was 1.45 as the crow flies, but when we hiked, it took us about 5 hour to get back to the same location. My son was having trouble with his knees. We meet with lots of rain and hail along the hike and were concerned about the lightening on the peaks, but it cleared out well as we went along. Our full hike was 11 hours and 45 minutes and and we hiked about 8.5 miles. We spent the night at our base camp and hiked out the next day.
