Ascent Trip ReportMade the stop at Lakewood Park on the way to Tuscaloosa. The park, which is where the high point is located, is probably less than a mile from the Alabama/Florida state line. It is a small park with picnic shelters, restroom and a parking area. Based on what folks have written in the peak log, it sounds like they have had some issues with sexual predators, so if you are a woman you may not want to go to the park alone (and certainly not after sunset) although it did not seem very threatening to me.
I counted 52 footsteps from my car to the actual marker, and I guessed a foot of elevation change but it could have been less! The log and a display of information from the High Pointers organization are on the restroom building wall. One of the newsletters even has a photo of snow on the ground at this park, which I suppose is a pretty rare occasion.
It was overcast, but the clouds did not affect the view since they were several thousand feet up :-) |
