Ascent Trip ReportToday is the 15th day of our trip "Maritimes 1999". When we arrived in this area yesterday we went directly to the Gros Morne Interpretive Center for trail information - a beautiful place, had to purchase a day pass ($3.25). While here we will stay at the Spirity Campground in Rocky Harbour.
This morning Rose dropped me off at the TH on Rte # 430, she will be busy today with a number of errands ..... laundry, ferry reservations, calling the kids, and shopping for the grandchildren.
I opted for a loop hike, leaving the TH at 8h15 hours, I soon arrived at the bottom of the steep gully that led up to the plateau. I met up with a St. John's couple and we decided to climb together.
About 3/4 of the way up the rocky steep gully we met up with a black bear sitting on the side of the trail. We had to wait around 'til he decided to move on/away from the trail.
We summited at 10h45 hours after leaving the TH 2 1/2 hours earlier. The surroundings reminded me of the Gaspe's Mount Jacques Cartier, open, rocky with little vegetation. The summit's panorama of Ten Mile Pond is truly awesome ..... you only see it in NF's tourist brochures. My friends moved on while I took a good break to absorb/enjoy the moment.
As you leave the plateau the descent towards Ferry Gulch starts out as a long wooden staircase followed by a long gradual rough stone trail, hard on the knees and feet. I got back to the TH after a 6 hour good day, Rose waiting.
We will overnight here before ferrying-ON to Nova Scotia tomorrow PM.
