Ascent Trip Report

This was part of Mt Pinos - Sawmill Mountain - Sawmill Mountain West (triple divide) hike which totaled 7.7 miles in 4 hours over some snow/ice. The views were great. Started the hike from the Nordic Center parking lot. The route up to Mt Pinos is generally straight forward 2 miles/600' gain. From Mount Pinos summit, headed over to the condor viewing area to obtain the trail to Sawmill Mountain (and beyond). There are some very nice switchbacks that drop you down 400' to a saddle; the bottom part is a little steep section which is noticeable on the return. I had extra waypoints not knowing how much snow we would encounter. There is a trail junction at N34.81301, W119.16511 marked with a logs and duck. Turn right to go up to Sawmill Mountain. The highpoint in Peakbagger isn't the real summit (anymore). Someone spent a lot of time building a huge rock cairn with Nepalese prayer flags which is just further a bit (can't miss it; N34.81365 W119.16798). We continued down the west side for Sawmill Mountain West (triple divide) before returning to the trail junction and back to Mt Pinos. Met a solo hiker on Sawmill Mtn.
