Ascent Trip Report

Scaly Mountain is west of Highlands on the Eastern Continental Divide. From US64 in Highlands, take NC106 (Dillard Road) south for 4.1 miles. Turn right on Turtle Pond Rd and go 0.2 miles. Bear left on Hickory Nut Road and go 0.9 miles to a sign that points toward the Bartram Trail. There's room to park several cars under the power lines on the right.

On the other side of Hickory Nut Road is a gated gravel road. This is the start of the blue-blazed Hickory Nut trail. Hike 0.3 miles on the road and then look for a small sign on the right pointing toward the Bartram Trail and Scaly Mountain. Leave the road, and continue 0.7 miles, mostly through rhododendron tunnels. Reach the yellow-blazed Bartram Trail in a switchback and take the right fork, which is signed for Scaly Mountain. The rest of the trail to the summit is a little steeper, rockier, and muddier. There are several clearings with great views from the summit ridge. The high point is probably in the first summit clearing, but it may be a boulder in the thicket behind the second clearing.
