Ascent Trip Report

Beaty's Butte is a prominent, cone-shaped peak at the south end of Catlow Valley, 25 miles southwest of the Roaring Springs Ranch in Harney County, Oregon. Eric Guthrie and I approached from the north, heading south from the Rock Creek Road opposite the Rock Creek Ranch--not a recommended route. The road often consisted of water-filled ruts for long stretches, and only Eric's skill as a off-roader got us through. We drove nearly to the top of the butte in his 4WD vehicle, then hiked 100 vertical feet to the summit. Great views. On our way out, we tried to go east to Hwy 205 on roads indicated on our TOPO maps--all nonexistent now. The reality is that the Roaring Springs Ranch has a north-to-south fence dividing Catlow Valley roughly in half, with only a few locked gates; so we ended up 4-wheeling along that fence all the way back to the Rock Springs Ranch! I told the manager of the Roaring Springs Ranch that he owed Eric and me a hundred bucks each for checking out his fence line. He was quite amused.
