Ascent Trip ReportAfter doing Swisshelm Peak from the west side, Dennis and I drove back to Douglas and I added some fuel for my truck and we picked up dinner at the Pizza Hut located nearby. Then we drove to the small town of Rodeo N.M. and found the road that would take us to Portal Az and a nearby campground where we spent the night car camping. The next morning, it was up bright and early to hit the trail that leads all the way to the top of Silver Peak, a peak that used to have a lookout on it. The trail is in great shape all the way and after climbing up some cement stairs, Dennis and I enjoyed a good hour on top enjoying the views and some snacks. It is 4.6 miles and 3100 feet to get to the summit from the trailhead.
On the way down, it started to heat up and even 75 degree weather seemed way to hot for someone who has just made it down from snowy and cold Utah. We spent another night at the same campground and that worked out well since our next mountain, Peloncillo, was about 65 miles away. Silver Peak has one of the best trails in Arizona and is a popular area for bird watchers. It was strange to not meet another person on that trail although a rather large mule seemed surprised to find us on "his" trail as we neared the trailhead. |
