Ascent Trip Report

Beautiful day to hike out of Dog Canyon in Guadalupe Mountains National Forest. It took us about 1.5 hours to drive to Dog Canyon from White’s City. A volunteer ranger was there, a RV park host was there and there was one other couple bird watching – no one else there! Dog Canyon has some darn pretty vistas.
On this hike I was trying to bag two peaks, Lost Peak at 7,830 feet and Peak 7916 at 7,916 feet). Each of these is on the Texas over 7000 list and each required short bushwhacks (0.2 – 0.3 miles) off a main trail. As I passed Lost peak, I saw no herd path to the top and the main trail started to descend so I hung a right turn climbed over some 2 to 3 feet ledges and scrambled to the top, where there is a large cairn and an ammo box with a peak register. Took pictures, signed the register and headed Southeast to meet up with the main trail. Finally picked up McKittrick Canyon trail (it’s further than the topo map in my GPS suggests) and hoofed it over to the vicinity of Peak 7916. I was planning to scramble up from the South col, but after seeing some significant vertical ledges decided to hike past it and come back to it from the North, where there were no ledges at all.
All in all, a good hike – productive and great views – I especially liked the view down McKittrick canyon having hiked up part of it just two days before.
