Ascent Trip Report

This was a redo of our earlier non-attempt at Mormon when we missed the turn off the main dirt road to the dirt road that leads to the correct wash and trailhead. This time I got out and built a fairly large cairn to mark the turnoff, though there is actually another one that is less bumpy but more sandy about 100 meters further up, so take your pick!

We could have continued up the road a ways further, but opted to park, having beat the crap out of Chase's poor Jeep Cherokee badly enough as it was.

We followed the road on foot, then took a wash branching off to the right, eventually going up a steep slope to the spine of the ridge. From here it was just a matter of following the ridge with some light Class 2 scrambling here and there, and some bypassing of anything tougher than that. This was good as my Achilles Tendon was absolutely killing me, and I wasn't keeping up well. The wind hit once on the ridge, but it was nice as the day was on the warm side of "pleasant" and the breeze cooled it down nicely.

Once up, we had snacks, took a few photos, and signed the register (except Anji, of course). Descent was by the same route we went up, but again I was having trouble keeping up. The leg was killing me even worse on the way down, but looking at my GPS data, I was still keeping about three miles per hour on steep, loose terrain for much of the way.

Near the trailhead, I dropped my pack and joined the others on a nearby outcrop that made for some interesting photos. I didn't include the outcrop in the stats, as my GPS was in my pack just sitting there the whole time, and it wasn't part of the route anyway.
