Ascent Trip Report

Made drive up to the catskills to hike Balsam Mt. from McKenley Hollow. Left home in the Poconos at 6:15am and started hiking at 9:15. Temps were very cold(barely double digits). Trail was packed pretty good from other hikers so I wore my microspikes the whole trip, although I carried snowshoes just in case. I forgot how steep parts of this trail was. It seemed like about 45 degrees at one point. Hiked the red dot trail to the junction with the blue dot trail, turned right on blue dot trail and took that to the peak. When I got to the trail junction on the ridge the wind really picked up. I thought my cheeks were going to get frostbite. The viewpoint just past the peak had a nice view, and I was fortunate to spot a bald eagle soaring below me. After a snack and some pictures I headed back down. I got back to the car at about 1:15pm, making it a 4hr. round trip. I made it back home to the Poconos at around 3:45pm. Good day hiking!
