Ascent Trip Report

We decided to make a day of it, so we parked at the info kiosk just off the road and then walked in. We were passed by about 4 vehicles on the way in. Once we made it to the old rail station, we took a break in the shadow of the water tower. We took the trail/dirt road labeled Jojoba Canyon South along the base of Piedras Grandes. When we reached the wash that runs just to the immediate South of Piedras Grandes, we turned right (West) and walked to the end of a small box canyon created by some boulders. Then we made our way over these, and then up a draw into a saddle, and then traversed to the left (South) to the top. Beautiful views all around. After spending a short time on top, we came down the Northern facing slope into the valley below, and then headed back towards the old rail station. From there we just followed the dirt road back to the kiosk. ^=40 *** One note on the return walk. We decided to make use of the old trail over the lava flow instead of walking back through the wash due to the amount of people riding motorcycles.... and the fact that we did not want to walk back through the sand again.
