Ascent Trip ReportI parked to the east of Bell Knob (at the gate on Bell Gap Road) to climb Eagle Mountain, and was so intrigued by the view of Bell Knob from Eagle Mountain, that I decided to bushwhack up to the distinctive cliff on Bell Knob to see what it was like!
There is an old trail that joins up with the road, but it's barely clear and I only followed it for a while. After that, I just went up! I finally made it to the scree field under the cliff and found that this is the local place to hurl interesting things. Amidst the rocky debris were TVs, lots of different tires, a frighting amount of propane tanks, lots of aerosol cans and a perfectly good football. Instead of attempting to navigate the steep mountain side (it might be climbable, but it looked like a stretch) I walk south around the mountain to find a number of ancient ring roads that ultimately lead up to a modern, if completely wrecked direct road across the summit.
I was not ready for the summit, but quickly found the source of those aerosol cans. The summit is littered with colorful graffiti, much of it from fraternities, and is a little unnerving yet ridiculously cool! The colorful stone spires at the summit make this a really interesting place to hang out. The views are fantastic! After getting my fill of this unusual place, I walked across the ridge line to check out the cellphone towers and then dropped back down the fall-line to my car.
