Ascent Trip Report

Date t.b.c.

Villarrica was surprisingly exciting! The initial ascent was easy following others' footsteps; crampons were carried but unnecessary. The poor weather which was forecast came in earlier than expected and many guided groups turned back, urging us to do the same. At the summit rim, which is fortunately quite secure, there was nil visibility, gusty winds, swirling grit and unpleasant strong sulphur smells, causing intermittent choking. We paused only to take a GPS reading not even for a photo. The descent was great, glissading down snow runnels. No-one else was around by that point!
