Ascent Trip Report

I wanted to go snowshoeing up a mountain, so after some masterdebation, I chose Mount Watatic, a small peak along the Wapack Trail that I had hiked only once before, in summer 2012.

Thankfully, the trailhead parking area was plowed, so I took advantage of that and pulled right in. I strapped on my snowshoes, put on my backpack, and got going.

The beginning of the trail had snowshoe tracks, so it was well packed. Around 0.1 mile in, I turned right onto the Wapack Trail. The easy lower part was nice, with some streams and a split boulder, but once the climbing began, I dramatically slowed my pace so that I wouldn't burn out. Shortly after the top of the steepest pitch, there was a ledge with a view toward Mount Wachusett and Mount Hunger.

At a "Wapack" sign, there was one final steep pitch, and then I made the easy walk to the bare summit. There were excellent views, and the breeze cooled me down a bit. A quick water and view appreciation break and then I headed north to Nutting Hill.
