Ascent Trip Report

We arrived at the TH at the end of Hidden Forest Road at 6:30pm where we camped for the night. We took our time the next morning and started the hike into Deadman Canyon right at 7am. The trail was unmistakable and easy to follow. There was quite a bit of snow in the second half of the canyon but it was all hard packed and didn't slow us down.

We arrived at the cabin at 10:30am, an hour later than I had hoped. At this point I was certain we would be on the summit of Hayford after 12pm and that there would be a good chance of hiking back out in the dark. After resting at the cabin and talking to the guy who camped there the previous night, we started hiking up to the spring and the ridgeline above. Once we hit the ridge and hiked north for a few minutes, Abbie decided she would wait there while Trystan and I continued on to the summit. I warned her that we would take close to 3 hours but she agreed to wait.

The ridgeline was well cairned and easy to follow, keeping on the crest most of the time. A while later we hit the saddle where we lost a lot of elevation before climbing the final steep slope to the summit. This is where Trystan and I split up, as I was hiking at a faster pace than him. I reached the summit just after 1pm. The views were limited by tree coverage but they were still decent. After waiting for 15-20 minutes I wasn't sure if Trystan gave up or was still ascending, so I started heading down. I ran into him a few minutes later...he was still climbing but decided he didn't want to go any further. We headed down and made it back to Abbie on the ridge about 2.5 hours after we left her.

Once back at the cabin, there was another group of guys preparing to camp there for the night. One guy said this was his 21st year in a row visiting the cabin. After resting and talking for a few minutes, we started hiking back out of the canyon between 3 and 3:30pm. We made it back to the TH at 5:30pm just as the last bit of light was leaving the sky...perfect timing. We camped again that night and drove home the next morning.

I plan to hike back to the cabin again in the future, but I will never hike Hayford again.
