Ascent Trip Report

I decided to clump Rabun, Flat Top and Alex together in one day, so I was pretty excited when I discovered a trail from Rabun to Alex that wasn't on my map! About 9/10 of a mile south of the Rabun summit, the trail splits off and heads west towards Flint Knob and Alex Mountain. It is blazed in red and blue, and swings between being tough to follow to being way over blazed. This route route is really convenient, because it you loose a lot of altitude between Flint Knob and Alex Mountain and the trail is nicely switchbacked to beat the burn. I followed the trail to Alex Gap, where it hits a road and sorta disappears. I decided to avoid the road and bushwhack up to Alex and was surprised to discover bits and pieces of of the blazed trail (some in red and others in blue), but it was hard to follow and I just ended up walking through the woods anyway.

The Alex summit is pretty nice, with a few winter friendly views. From Flint Knob you first arrive at a water tower, and can take a nice little path along the summit, across the high point and to the antenna for some more views. I pretty much backtracked after hitting the summit, although I took the road down for a few tenths of a mile just to check out the neighborhood and get some views.
